Hello! I programmed a new homebrew game for the Commodore 64, this one is Madness Combat themed!

The game is playable on real Commodore 64 hardware from the 80's, and the game binary is around 8 kilobytes large.

It's playable here on Newgrounds through a Javascript C64 emulator.

Here's the link to the game:

And here is a GIF of the game in action:

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

I haven't been active on this site for a long time, but I have been active in the retro programming and homebrewing scene lately!

Over the past few months I learned BASIC as well as 6502 assembly and got busy making some cool games for the Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 systems.

So far I did the programming for Good Deal Games' new cartridge release "Lava Trip", made ports of Duck and Cover for the 2600 and C64, and programmed multiple mini-games for the C64.

You can find footage of Lava Trip in action here, as well as the source code for my other games here and here.

I made my Atari 2600 games using an awesome programming language called batari Basic, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in retro game development.

As for my Commodore 64 games, I designed and implemented a custom Lisp-like programming language that compiles to 6502 assembly. I programmed Duck and Cover as well as my mini-games entirely in this language, and the source code for the compiler is available here.

Here is a photo of Duck and Cover running on my real Commodore 64:

And here is a GIF of one of the mini-games in action:

I've been having a lot of fun programming for these retro systems, and I plan on publishing some homebrews to Newgrounds using Javascript emulators in the future!

Thanks for reading and happy holidays!

Hello! Today I want to announce the new game I released, as well as write a 2023 recap and a blog.

== NEW GAME ==

Super Combo Stomp!

iu_1131146_6574497.png

Today I released my new game, Super Combo Stomp!

It's a game about shifting gravity as a spiked boot in order to stomp enemies and score points.

It has 15 levels, an endless mode, and a fully-fledged level editor with the ability to load and play custom levels!

The game costs $1.99 USD, but there's also a free demo you can download so you can try before you buy!

The game is currently available for Windows and Linux systems.

MORE INFO HERE!

== 2023 RECAP ==

This year I released 5 whole games with the help of my friends!

In this recap I will talk about how I made these games and what my inspirations were.

Game #1: CULLER

CULLER was the first game I released in 2023.

While working on Duck and Cover, I came up with the idea for a shooter game where you needed to match the colours of your enemies on the fly to score points. I couldn't get the idea out of my head until I made it a reality, so I whipped it up as a small side project while I finished up Duck and Cover.

I went with a minimalist art style for this one, because I wanted to challenge myself by making the game with the least amount of custom sprites. If I remember correctly, I only needed to use 2 sprites to create the game!

Game #2: Duck and Cover

Duck and Cover is a game inspired by this scene from the movie "Despicable Me" where the main character needs to weave through a swarm of missiles to dodge them. I thought that would be a fun idea for a game, so I made Duck and Cover!

Duck and Cover's modifier system was inspired by games like Unreal Tournament and Towerfall: Ascension.

Originally the game was going to be called "Duck Pond Destruction", but one of my friends came up with the name "Duck and Cover" during a playtesting session!

This game is currently my highest rated game, and it netted me my first daily award at 5th place!

Game #3 Duck and Cover 2

Duck and Cover 2 is a sequel to Duck and Cover with a higher emphasis on platforming.

Originally this game was INCREDIBLY different, being a game where you played as basketballs that needed to bounce around and perform tricks. This original concept was flawed and confusing to playtesters, so I scrapped it and transformed it into Duck and Cover 2!

This game was my first attempt at monetizing my work. My monetization method was making the game completely free and open-source, but selling an additional DLC expansion pack for $2.00 USD.

Game #4 CULLER 2

Just like CULLER 1, I made this game as a side project while working on Duck and Cover 2!

This game's aesthetics were inspired by old Japanese browser games I used to play with my dad as a kid.

As well as multiple new enemy types, this game added a multiplayer co-op mode.

Game #5 Super Combo Stomp

This game is actually an old scrapped demo resurrected into a full commercial release!

The concept of shifting gravity to stomp on enemies was present in a scrapped game that I made before Duck and Cover 1. While looking through my old projects, I found it and thought it had potential! Because of this, I built upon it until it was a full release!

That's all for the 2023 recap! I'm probably going to take a break from making games until the new year.

== BLOG ==

Since writing my last blog, I've spent a lot of time hanging out with my family and enjoying the holidays!

Lately I've been playing a lot of Lethal Company with my friends and little brother! I highly recommend that game, it's tons of fun when playing multiplayer!

I also watched Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron in theater with a friend. I don't want to spoil anything about the plot, so I will just say that the animation and visuals were incredible, and it's worth a watch for that alone!

Despite the cold December weather, I'm still regularly skateboarding whenever there's no snow on the ground.

I've been having a lot of fun making up dumb new no-comply tricks and cruising around my neighborhood!

That's about it for this news post, have a merry holiday season and a happy new year!

Hello! I want to share some news regarding my games as well as some random thoughts I've had in the style of a blog.

THE NEWS

=========

This is the section where I share news about my games.

Around a week ago, I released a major update for my game Duck and Cover 2 called the "TURBO UPDATE"! I called it the TURBO UPDATE because I added a modifier that makes the screen scroll twice as fast. When you combine fast scrolling with fast ducks, you get TURBO MODE!

I also added a bunch of other cool modifiers, here is a list of them:

  • Exploding Corpses
  • Deadly Lava
  • Slow Scrolling
  • Instakill Bonks
  • Reverse Controls

When the update first released, it introduced some new bugs alongside the new features. I fixed all the issues I could find, but there could possibly be other glitches or bugs that I missed. If you ever find any issues in the game, be sure to let me know and I will try my best to fix them!

Making this update was really fun and I have some more ideas that I would like to implement, so stay tuned for future updates like this!

Below is some quick promo art I made.

You can find more information regarding the update HERE!

In other news, I have been experimenting with a Christmas-themed puzzle game idea I had about colorful stacks of presents. The gameplay involves finding errors in towers of presents that are supposed to be stacked in a specific pattern. Within the time limit you have to find as many presents as possible that don't fit the patterns! As of right now the game is just a weird little experiment, so everything about it is subject to change before release. Currently I find the game very stressful and challenging, so I will most likely add some extra difficulty options for people that don't enjoy games like that.

Below is a screenshot of the game with gloriously horrendous placeholder graphics!

I also made my game CULLER 2 open source recently, so if you want to see how the game works or make some custom mods, you can now download the full source code!

THE BLOG

=========

This is the section where I talk about random stuff in my life, like the games I've played and the stuff I've been up to.

A few months ago I beat Hotline Miami 2 on hard mode, which was unsurprisingly, really hard! HM2 is already a really hard game, so the hard mode gave it the difficulty of a rage-inducing arcade or NES game. Somehow suffering through the amped-up difficulty made me appreciate the game and its message even more. If you haven't played that game, I highly suggest you play Hotline Miami 1, and then play the sequel. The gameplay, graphics, and soundtrack are amazing, you will not regret playing these games!

I also beat Alien Hominid Invasion in co-op mode with my brothers! That game is tons of fun, especially with friends.

Today I beat Undertale for the first time, and WOW that game is amazing! I really like the concept of a story based game where you can play as a total pacifist and just befriend everyone. The gameplay is really unique and the soundtrack and story are insanely good! Playing Undertale makes me want to make an RPG game of my own sometime! I remember I played Deltarune (Undertale's episodic spin-off) multiple years ago, and I missed a lot of the references and parallels because I never played the first game before. Now I'm going to replay Deltarune with my eyes peeled for those Easter eggs!

I recently got a new job working at a warehouse, and I've been finding it really enjoyable! At work I get to do cool stuff like move stacks of boxes with a pallet jack, as well as put price tags on stuff! I would say it's definitely a good way for me to make money while saving for college!

I've been getting back into skateboarding again as well, despite the fact that I'm not that great at doing tricks anymore. I used to be able to ollie really high as well as do rolling shuv-its consistently, but not anymore. Kickflips were challenging to me because they are REALLY scary to commit to, so I could only ever consistently land them if I was on gravel or grass. I think I only ever landed a kickflip once or twice while on pavement. Anyways, I haven't been stressing about tricks too much lately, I've mainly just been cruising around and occasionally trying some easier tricks like boneless 180s or cavemen.

THE END

========

That's all for this post!

Thank you for reading, and have an amazing day!

I recently created a webpage for my game development team, Ig Dipper Games!

(It's like "big dipper" but without the "b"!)

On this new website, you will find our full catalogue of games, as well as news updates and additional information!

The website currently looks pretty basic due to my lack of HTML skills, but hopefully that will improve in the future!
